You Really DO Need Your Beauty Sleep

We’ve all been told time and time again how important it is to get our “beauty sleep.” It turns out our moms have been right all along—our skin repairs and recovers at night while our bodies (and minds) are at rest.

According to Dr. Shasu Hu, Miami-based dermatologist and Dr. Brandt Skin Advisory Board member, our skin is more open at night and allows active ingredients in skincare products to penetrate deeply and be even more effective than during the day. This is due to our skin naturally losing the most moisture at night and the idea that the surface skin temperate peaks around midnight and gradually cools in the morning, says Hu.

On the flip side, since skin is more receptive at night, it’s important to use a balancing blend of ingredients to avoid excess irritation. Meaning, look for some soothing ingredients in your nighttime products like niacinamide and botanical extracts including lavender and green tea.

So now that we know the “why”, how about the “what”? As in, what should we be using on our skin during this critical time? Scroll down to check out our top eight picks for bedtime beauty.
